Backpacking Camp California

A Backpacking Camp in California That Builds Confidence and Leadership

Deer Crossing Wilderness Camp offers a true backpacking camp experience in California for youth ages 8–17. Located in the Desolation Wilderness near Lake Tahoe, our overnight summer camp immerses campers in the backcountry while providing expert supervision, age-appropriate challenges, and a strong focus on safety and personal growth.

During the final three days of each two-week session, campers participate in guided wilderness backpacking trips. With multiple trips offered each session, we accommodate a wide range of experience levels—from first-time backpackers to highly motivated teens seeking advanced challenges. Campers explore alpine lakes, hike through pristine wilderness, observe wildlife, and sleep under the stars, all while learning practical outdoor skills and leadership.

Each backpacking trip is supervised by two trained wilderness guides who teach Leave No Trace ethics, backcountry safety, and outdoor living skills. Campers are encouraged to take on leadership roles throughout the trip, helping build confidence, responsibility, and teamwork in a supportive environment.

Backpacking Options for Every Experience Level

Valley Trips are designed for beginner backpackers, with shorter hiking days (about three miles) and frequent breaks. These trips introduce campers to backpacking in California’s Desolation Wilderness, with destinations such as Buck Island Lake and Rockbound Lake.

Mini-Ascent Trips are for more experienced campers who are ready for longer days and increased responsibility. These trips typically cover 5–7 miles per day and may include off-trail exploration and trip planning. Campers must interview with instructors to ensure they are prepared for the challenge.

Full Ascent Trips are our most advanced backpacking option. Qualified campers plan and lead their own three-day, two-night backpacking expedition, making decisions about routes, meals, campsites, and goals. Instructors remain present for safety, but campers take full ownership of the experience.

Why Parents Choose Deer Crossing

Deer Crossing Wilderness Camp is intentionally remote, with no road access—campers hike in and gear arrives by boat—creating a meaningful wilderness experience from the start. Our program is built on the belief that competence builds self-esteem. Through backpacking, navigation, canoeing, and outdoor leadership, campers gain independence, resilience, and confidence that carry far beyond the summer.
