Deer Crossing Wilderness Camp is where adventure and growth meet. Nestled on the crystal clear shores of Loon Lake, deep in the California wilderness near Lake Tahoe, our overnight summer camp for youth ages 8-17 offers a one of a kind summer experience that builds confidence, skills, and lifelong friendships.
With no roads leading in, every camper begins their journey by hiking through the forest, while gear travels by boat setting the tone for a true wilderness adventure from day one. Founded on the belief that competence builds self esteem, Deer Crossing teaches essential outdoor skills like wilderness safety, canoeing, and navigation with map and compass. As campers grow, they can take on exciting challenges such as windsurfing, rock climbing, and advanced expeditions that build strength, independence, and teamwork.
Campers return year after year not just for the fun, but for the sense of belonging, confidence, and adventure that only nature can provide. At Deer Crossing Wilderness Camp, every day is a chance to discover what you're capable of and to build memories that last a lifetime.
Hidden in the Eldorado National Forest, Deer Crossing Wilderness Camp is only reachable by foot or boat. Here, campers learn leadership, resilience, and teamwork through challenges that are both thrilling and transformative.
No roads. No screens. Just clean air, clear water, and the rhythm of nature. Each day brings new challenges and discoveries.
Every day is packed with new discoveries and challenges designed to inspire growth, teamwork, and joy.

Our 2 kids have grown their leadership, confidence and appreciation for nature. This is one of the best investments we have made in the development of our 2 teens.
Our son, 12, went to a 2 weeks camp. He had an amazing time. Learnt a lot - canoeing, kayaking, climbing, hiking and much more. The staff was great and we felt he was in very good reliable hands. We hope to be back.
Our daughter describes her time at Deer Crossing as the best time of her life (and we are a fun, outdoorsy family to begin with). The program, instructors, counselors, staff and facilities/location are truly exceptional (natural paradise of a gorgeous lake surrounded by trees and mountains). In addition to all the fun, Deer Crossing emphasizes real skills development in numerous activities from kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, wind surfing, sailing, and seemingly a million other things. Safety standards are high. I toured the camp on day #1 on a small parent tour and appreciated being able to see the place first hand. Food rating as reported by kiddos = A+. We plan to return next summer! Thank you, Doug, John, Rob, Laura and all Deer Crossing team members.
I was a camper about 30 years ago. My life took a much different and positive trajectory thanks to this camp. The founder of the camp rooted this place in the idea that positivity and growing a child's self esteem were the keys to setting them on a path for a positive life and success. They don't accomplish this through any sort of hippy dippy philosophy, it's instilled through the way they talk to campers, the way they encourage campers, the ways they empower campers, and they grow campers.
